Soumakh

Soumakh is a method of making handmade rugs with raised patterns. This ancient weaving technique, dating back to the 7th century BC, is still popular in parts of Persia
and the Caucasus. In a Soumakh rug, the colored weft threads of the pattern lie diagonally to the horizontal, and by changing the angle of the alternating rows, V-shaped rows with parallel lines are created. On the back of the rug, the loose ends of the pattern yarns hang freely, forming a padding; this rugged backside distinguishes it from the kilim, which is smooth on both sides. Repeating diamond and star medallions are common in Soumakh rugs, as are the intricate borders. Verneh and Sileh are two famous Soumakh patterns.

Many saddle bags from tribes—and even bedding—are woven from Soumakh. We have curated a refined collection of Soumakh rugs to equip your home with an essential complementary piece.
