Soumakh

Soumak is a method of making handmade rugs with raised patterns. This ancient weaving technique, which dates back to the 7th century BC, is still popular in parts of Persia
and the Caucasus. In a Soumak rug, the colored weft threads of the pattern lie at an angle to the horizontal, and changing the angle of the alternating rows creates V-shaped rows with parallel lines. On the back of the rug, the loose ends of the pattern yarns hang freely and form padding; this uneven back distinguishes it from a kilim, which is smooth on both sides. Repeating diamond and star medallions are just as common in Soumak rugs as elaborate borders. Verneh and Sileh are two famous Soumak patterns.

There are many tribal saddle bags—and even bed linens—woven using the Soumak technique. We have put together a sophisticated collection of Soumakh rugs to furnish your home with an indispensable addition.
