Soumakh

Soumak is a method for making handwoven carpets with raised patterns. This ancient weaving technique, dating back to the 7th century BC, is still popular in parts of Persia and the Caucasus. In a Soumak carpet, the colored weft threads of the pattern lie obliquely to the horizontal, and by changing the angle of the alternating rows, V-shaped rows with parallel lines are formed. On the back of the carpet, the loose ends of the pattern yarns hang freely and form a padding; this rugged back distinguishes it from the kilim, which is smooth on both sides. Repeating diamond and star medallions are common in Soumak carpets, as are elaborate borders. Verneh and Sileh are two famous Soumak patterns.

There are many saddle bags from tribes - and even bedding - woven from Soumak. We have assembled a refined collection of Soumakh carpets to equip your home with an indispensable complementary piece.
